“Brims” magazine

Concept:

The idea for this project was to create a magazine concept catering to a specific customer segment, design a cover, spreads, an infographic, and a magazine ad. I took this concept and added an element of satire, choosing a niche customer segment that is vain, wealthy, values high-fashion hats, and susceptible to so-called ‘expert’ opinions. The magazine is designed to appear pompous, sophisticated, exclusive, and high-culture.

Process:

Once the parameters of the magazine concept were set, I knew I would find the greatest use out of a highly specific customer segment as it would mean a highly specific style ecosystem. There would be less room to make a compromising, mass appeal element and I would have to spend more time making sure the theming is consistent to such a particular audience. Black and white were chosen for highly contrasting sophistication with yellow as an accent. Yellow was included due to its associations with ego and wealth, though its saturation also creates an association with hazards, lessening the upbeat, happy feeling that normally accompanies yellow.
